7 golden rules of wood flooring maintenance
Wood flooring care and maintenance is not a complex procedure; that is why wood is frequently installed in domestic spaces and sometimes in shops.
The most common objection regarding wood flooring is its extreme delicacy and difficulty of maintenance. It as a false objection, actually.
Rule n. 1 Environmental conditions
It is extremely important that your wood flooring is placed in comfortable environmental conditions.
The temperature should be around 20°C and the relative humidity between 55% and 65%. If the environment is more humid or drier several problems may occur: too dry climate can cause cracks on the boards; too much humidity can cause dimensional variations, expansions and contractions that can damage the hardwood top layer. Remember that a healthy living environment for human being, will be the best for your wooden floor too.
The use of brightening products will help your wooden floor preserving its original look over years
Rule n. 2 – How to prevent and avoid abrasion
EIt’s necessary to remind you that the lacquer cannot withstand pointed objects, like nails etc.. Moreover, heavy weights such as legs of furniture, high heels, can damage the surface.
For a daily maintenance, use regularly the vacuum cleaner or a mop to avoid debris, particles of stone or other objects which can easily build up and cause anaesthetic scratches or furrows on the surface, because of heavy traffic. The use of carpets or mats in high traffic areas (entrance, seating systems, etc..) will keep the quality of lacquering unchanged
Rule n. 3 – The cleaning
The best way to clean your wooden floor is to use a humid cloth, when needed, adding detergent products. Avoid an excessive use of water or other liquids. Should you seal the edge of boards, we recommend the use of a sealant product: this choice also depends on the area in which your wood flooring has to be installed; it is recommended, anyway, when frequently cleaning.
Rule n. 4 – The refinishing
In case of experienced wood flooring, you may decide to refinish your wood flooring. The process consist of sanding the old finish off through the abrasion, applying then a new finish on it (lacquer or other finishes). It is a complex operation indeed; however, if well done, just a small portion of the wear layer thickness will be removed, taking your wood flooring back to its original and new looking appearance.
Rule n. 5 – The scratches
Wood flooring is undoubtedly elegant and refined, when perfectly intact and smooth. In case of scratches, however, it may look like anaesthetic, as if it was old and neglected. That is why we suggest you adopt the proper measures
The scratches appear much more evident in presence of a lacquered wood flooring, than a brushed one.
In order to solve the problem, we suggest you address to a specialized expert for a correct evaluation; first he could decide to use a polishing machine on the whole surface or eventually, to re-finish the wood flooring entirely .
Rule 6 – Maintenance products
There are a wide range of wood cleaning products on the market; however, are they all useful? How choose among them? Here you have some suggestions:
Microfiber cloth: it is essential for a correct cleaning, thanks to its electrostatic action; it removes every piece of dust without leaving shadows. It has to be humid, well wrung, to prevent water on the wooden floor
Detergents must be neutral soap based, solvent free, with a ph between 6 and 7, in order not to damage the finishing (lacquered, oiled or waxed) and not to make the wooden floor opaque. Generally they are concentrated products to be dissolved into water, according the related labels instructions. These products may contain same fragrances or other disinfectant elements.
You may mix 250 ml white vinegar and a spoon of Marseille soap in 5 litres of water. For a delicate fragrance, you may add 4 or 5 drops essential oil, such as eucalyptus, lavender or citrus on choice.
De-waxing products to remove multiple coats of wax.
Mix them in water according the related label instructions and apply gently on the wood flooring. Then, leave the solution work for a time and remove the excess with a big brusher . Before it dries, rinse it generously and apply a new coat after 24 hours at least.
they are paste spray or liquid wax, synthetic or natural based.
While the paste wax is very difficult to manage, it must be applied by hand, the liquid wax requires just a humid cloth, for a gentle and easy application. The best waxes for wood flooring are bees waxes and vegetal resins, because they polish the wood floor while caring it, giving it a new life and leaving on the surface a protective coat which prevents spots and dust from being absorbed. Waxes perform best on unfinished wood flooring
There are many products on the market, for brightening the top layer of your wood flooring (varnished or oiled). Before using one of them, however we do strongly suggest you addressing to a professional.
Stain removers, solvent based – see Rule n. 5
